Is it time for a science counterpart of the Benezet–Berman mathematics teaching experiment of the 1930’s?

Abstract. Should teachers concentrate on critical thinking, estimation, measurement, and graphing rather than college-clone algorithmic physics in grades K–12?3 Thus far physics education research offers little substantive guidance. Mathematics education research addressed the mathematics analogue of this question in the 1930’s. Students in Manchester, New Hampshire were not subjected to arithmetic algorithms until grade 6. In earlier grades they read, invented, and discussed stories and problems; estimated lengths, heights, and areas; and enjoyed finding and interpreting numbers relevant to their lives. In grade 6, with 4 months of formal training, they caught up to the regular students in algorithmic ability, and were far ahead in general numeracy and in the verbal, semantic, and problem solving skills they had practiced for the five years before.
Assessment was both qualitative – e.g., asking 8th grade students to relate in their own words why it is ‘that if you have two fractions with the same numerator, the one with the smaller denominator is the larger’; and quantitative – e.g., administration of standardized arithmetic examinations to test and control groups in the 6th grade. Is it time for a science counterpart of the Benezet/Berman Manchester experiment of the 1930’s?

TEACHER STUDENTS’ RESEARCHES ON COGNITIVE ACTIVITY WITH TECHNOLOGIES

Abstract: This paper represents the results of special courses given to undergraduate teacher students of «mathematics-computer science» speciality. A general idea that integrated these courses, consist in the training of future teachers for understanding the possibilities and limits of the use of technologies (systems like DERIVE and Cabri-geometre) for support of pedagogical control of learners’ cognitive activity. It is very important to develop teacher students’ abilities for their researches on why and how they should use technologies particularly like microworlds and computer algebra systems. It gave an opportunity to encourage teacher students’ interest in teaching algorithmic and half-algorithmic problems as well as heuristic problems and therefore heuristic methods of operations that intrinsic of creative activities

Knowledge Assessment Using Fuzzy Conceptual Representation

Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) has existed for many years. One of the problems in ITS research is knowledge proficiency assessment.  It  is  extremely  diffficult  to  assess  a  student's knowledge  accurately.  Many  researchers  have  applied different  techniques,  such  as,  Bayesian  method,  for approximation.  In  addition, many  ITSs restrict the  student's input by providing interface control or limiting the  input set. These  unnatural  approaches  do  not  allow  natural  language input from the student.  This paper presents an  application of fuzzy  logic  on  student  knowledge  assessment.  It  also introduces a new knowledge representation, Fuzzy Conceptual Web.  Fuzzy  Conceptual  Web  bridges  the  gaps  between different levels of knowledge representation.  It also facilitates • free form of input by the student.  In addition, the knowledge representation allows  for  scaling up  of the  knowledge  base. The new approach has been tested on  an  ITS,  called Optimal Physics  Tutor,  in  the  domain  of mechanical  physics.  The system  has  been  found  to  be  appropriate  and  effective  in assessing the student's knowledge proficiency level.

Peer-Led Team Learning: A Student-Faculty Partnership for Transforming the Learning Environment

The challenge for faculty is how to engage students withcontent. Whether students are at a residential research university or commute to a community college, providing the many experiences essential for learning is often limited tothe use of lecture. The lecture is efficient at transmitting content but does not provide the freedom to discuss and debate scientific concepts in a challenging but nonthreatening environment, the connection to mentors, and the power of working in a team. How can students be involved in serious debate and discussion in the context of a large lecture hall? How can they be engaged in critical thinking and problem-posing if their curriculum is driven by content coverage and the time constraints of three 50-minute meetings per week?

Meta Element Used In Search Engine Optimization

Meta elements provide information about a given Web page, most often to help search engines categorize them correctly. They are inserted into the HTML document, but are often not directly visible to a user visiting the site.
They have been the focus of a field of marketing research known as search engine optimization (SEO), where different methods are explored to provide a user's site with a higher ranking on search engines. In the mid to late 1990s, search engines were reliant on meta data to correctly classify a Web page and webmasters quickly learned the commercial significance of having the right meta element, as it frequently led to a high ranking in the search engines — and thus, high traffic to the website.

Meta Tag

Meta elements are the HTML or XHTML <meta … > element used to provide structured metadata about a Web page. Multiple elements are often used on the same page: the element is the same, but its attributes are different. Meta elements can be used to specify page description, keywords and any other metadata not provided through the other head elements and attributes.
The meta element has two uses: either to emulate the use of the HTTP response header, or to embed additional metadata within the HTML document.
With HTML up to and including HTML 4.01 and XHTML, there were four valid attributes: content, http-equiv, name and scheme. Under HTML 5 there are now five valid attributes: charset having been added. http-equiv is used to emulate the HTTP header. name to embed metadata. The value of the statement, in either case, is contained in the content attribute, which is the only required attribute unless charset is given. charset is used to indicate the character set of the document, and is available in HTML5.
Such elements must be placed as tags in the head section of an HTML or XHTML document.

Robot

A robot is a mechanical or virtual intelligent agent that can perform tasks automatically or with guidance, typically by remote control. In practice a robot is usually an electro-mechanical machine that is guided by computer and electronic programming. Robots can be autonomous, semi-autonomous or remotely controlled. Robots range from humanoids such as ASIMO and TOPIO to Nano robots, Swarm robots, Industrial robots, military robots, mobile and servicing robots. By mimicking a lifelike appearance or automating movements, a robot may convey a sense that it has intent or agency of its own. The branch of technology that deals with robots is robotics.

History Of The Robot

The word robot was introduced to the public by the Czech interwar writer Karel Čapek in his play R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots), published in 1920. The play begins in a factory that makes artificial people called robots, though they are closer to the modern ideas of androids, creatures who can be mistaken for humans. They can plainly think for themselves, though they seem happy to serve. At issue is whether the robots are being exploited and the consequences of their treatment.
Karel Čapek himself did not coin the word. He wrote a short letter in reference to an etymology in the Oxford English Dictionary in which he named his brother, the painter and writer Josef Čapek, as its actual originator.
